In honor of it being Friday and Grammys weekend, here’s a great story about the rock band Van Halen, written by Christopher Brown (business2community blog). The band provided written specifications to contractors, filled with details, that communicated how the stage should be prepared. The band also had a requirement to have available a bowl of M&Ms with the brown M&Ms removed (which many people thought was ridiculous). In fact, this demand was a test. If David Lee Roth saw brown M&Ms, he insisted on a full check of the complete production – believing that this indicted almost certainly that the details of the specifications had not been read carefully, and there were most likely errors. “David needed a way to check that people were paying attention to the details of his requirements as a customer.”
