Raf Gelders, CEB (Corporate Executive Board) blog contributor writes about the results of a global survey that indicates the way employees use data and the realities of big data. The use of data has changed drastically and here are highlights of the survey:

  • Only 50% of employees use the structured data found via enterprise-wide systems.  At least 70% use the data stored on their desktops. More than 80% use unstructured content every week and almost everyone consults colleagues or experts for undocumented information.
  • Challenges faced by CIOs concerning big data investments include identifying business opportunities, innovation in exploiting, improving the usability of information and “upskilling” IT staff.
