CNET’s Emily Dreyfuss reports that recently Overstock announced that it would “beat Amazon by 10 percent on its books.” Amazon appeared to have then matched those prices. Thus, we now have a full-blown price war that greatly benefits the book customer. An example Ms. Dreyfuss gives is Dan Brown’s Inferno. On July 29, this fairly new hardcover was selling at both Overstock and Amazon for $10.48, discounted from the list price of $29.95 (a 65% savings).
